Insurance Vs. Loss Damage Waiver: Understanding the Differences

Optional Loss Damage Waiver:

The Loss Damage Waiver is optional and can be added to your rental for an additional daily fee. The Loss Damage Waiver covers your liability for damage to the vehicle that is the cause of theft, vandalism, or acts of nature. One good example is if you are driving down the highway and a rock hits your windshield causing a chip or a crack, you won’t be financially responsible for the replacement cost of the windshield so long as you have LDW included in your rental. Loss Damage Waiver is not vehicle insurance and will be VOID if you are found to be in violation of the rental terms & conditions.

Opting out of the Loss Damage Waiver means you are opting out of any roadside assistance coverage from RideShare Carz (flat tires, dead batteries, and tows will need to be addressed and handled by you or the rideshare app you are online with at the time of occurrence). Most importantly, you will be held liable for all damage that is found on the vehicle, outside of damage that resulted from an accident involving another vehicle. Additionally, you will be required to come in for weekly vehicle inspections and an additional deposit will be required ($300 total deposit).

Included Insurance Policy:

Liability Insurance is already included with every rental at no additional cost. This policy meets the state minimum liability requirements and covers your liability to other vehicles, persons, or property (up to the state-minimum) during periods when you are not covered by a TNC insurance policy. This policy does not cover your liability to the vehicle being rented, for example hit & run, hail damage, or broken/cracked windshields (see Loss Damage Waiver).

The insurance policy provided to you covers your liability to other persons and/or vehicles in the event of an ACCIDENT. An accident is typically anything that involves more than $2,500 in damage done to the vehicle. The renter may be required to pay a damage deductible of up to $500.

Your coverage changes depending on the period of driving that you fall under at the time of an accident or incident. The periods of driving are defined below:

“Period 0” is used to refer to when the vehicle is being operated and you are not logged into an approved rideshare or delivery platform. This is also referred to as “off-app” or “personal use” in most cases.
o During this period, RideShare Carz insurance policy would be the primary insurance. Reporting the accident/incident to RideShare Carz within 24 hours is required.

“Period 1” is used to refer to when the vehicle is being operated while you are logged into an approved rideshare/delivery platform but have not yet received a job, ride, or delivery request.
o During this period, RideShare Carz insurance policy would be the primary insurance. Reporting the accident/incident to RideShare Carz within 24 hours is required.

“Period 2” is used to refer to when the vehicle is being operated while you are on the way to the pick-up location of the passenger or delivery item that has been assigned to you. This is also referred to as “en-route” in some cases.
o During this period, the two main Driver apps carry your primary insurance policy. You must report the accident/incident through the app, as well as reporting to RideShare Carz.

“Period 3” is used to refer to when the vehicle is being operated while you are logged into an approved rideshare/delivery platform, and the passenger or delivery items are in your vehicle. This is also referred to as “in transit” in some cases.
o During this period, the two main Driver apps carry your primary insurance policy. You must report the accident/incident through the app, as well as reporting to RideShare Carz.

While the vehicle is in your possession (from the time you pick up the vehicle until it has been confirmed as returned by RideShare Carz) you are financially responsible for any damage or loss that occurs regardless of fault. The insurance policy provided by RideShare Carz does NOT cover physical damage to the rental vehicle, it only covers your liability to other vehicles, persons, or property.
